Newcastle Afoot Team Tips!

Thanks for coming on tour with us!! We want to make sure you get the most out of your time in Newcastle, whether you are a visitor or a local. Here are some of our personal favourite things to do and places to go in Newcastle.

Morning Snack: Bootleg Bakery

10 James St, Merewether

The ultimate hidden gem in the backstreets of Merewether. This pastry and tart bakery operates only on Fridays and Saturdays 8am - 12:00pm. Get up early and grab your sweets from the bright red van parked in the driveway, then walk across to the lovely suburban park to eat them quick!

Breakfast: Estabar

61 Shortland Esplanade, Newcastle

Head to this Newcastle Beach cafe for delicious seasonal brunch. We recommend their buckwheat pancakes if they’re on the menu, add a scoop of seasonal in-house gelato! This is the local cafe where everybody really does know your name!

Shopping Time: Make Space

The Station, 4 Watt Street, Newcastle

The ultimate Newcastle gift shop. It’s places like Make Space that helped most of our guides fall in love with Newcastle. Beautiful architecture, community, and creative culture collide in this gallery, shop and workshop space.

Beer Time: Method Brewing

18 Maitland Road, Islington

The Newcastle Afoot team spends a lot of time at this little brewery - Alex loves it so much that she manages their socials! We love that you can “pick your own” flavour to go with their yummy sour beer - passionfruit is our fave!

Dinner: The Humble Thai

27 King Street, Newcastle

Our favourite Thai food in town, not just because it is SO FRESH, modern, and yummy, but because the team are very friendly and put a lot of love into what they do.

Takeaway Time: Scotties

36 Scott Street, Newcastle East

This fancier-than-average fish and chip kiosk is the favourite of locals living in the area, and it’s all about atmosphere. Grab one of their blankets, set up under the fairy lights, and enjoy some freshly caught local seafood with a beer.

Gallery Browsing: The Lock Up

90 Hunter Street, Newcastle

Explore old and new of Newcastle. Police lock up cells are reinvented monthly in this nationally recognised contemporary art space.

After Dark: Jam’s Karaoke

8 Union Street, Newcastle West

Newcastle Afoot owner Becky loves this place so much that she had her 40th birthday here, and organised for a bunch of her artists to add some colour to their courtyard.

We encourage you to think outside the square and book a karaoke room with your mates, it is the most cathartic way to bond!
