All of our curriculum-linked walking tours have been developed in close consultation with academic educators and practising classroom teachers to ensure that they cover student learning outcomes from kindergarten to Year 12.

Geography

Our tours are designed to help your students connect with geography in a hands-on experience in the many environments of Newcastle Harbour. They’ll discover Newcastle’s natural environment and urban renewal in the ultimate outdoor classroom.

The significance of place

Places hold significance to individuals, communities and the environments that surround them. Our school excursions lead your students through Newcastle’s range of environments, historical memorials and modern sites of significance to let them investigate a range of places and identities. 

With activities, stories and exploration we want to help your students learn to identify the features of places, investigate the differences and similarities between them and understand how humans shape the spaces around us.  


One city, many environments

Our walking tours take advantage of Newcastle’s diverse range of environments to show your students how interwoven natural and urban areas are. They can explore the mangroves along Throsby Creek, the coastal systems of Newcastle East, and urban environments in the city itself. 

With case studies, historical art, and lots of activities, your students will be able to investigate the ways that these environments interact, influence and rely on each other. They will be able to see firsthand the ways that these environments have changed and the ways we manage them.


History

Newcastle is a city filled to the brim with history and it has evolved several identities over its lifetime. It’s a place where old and new can be seen side by side. Watch your students walk through time and experience Newcastle’s unique history with Newcastle Afoot’s history excursions.
