Muloobinba Wander - Stage 2 at Newcastle Harbour

Experience Muloobinba, Newcastle and the lower Hunter Region, with Newcastle Afoot’s Muloobinba Wander. Starting at The Station with our Homebase mural, your Year 3 and 4 students will be immersed in Aboriginal, colonial and convict history as we explore the connection between places and people.

Since we launched the Muloobinba Wander in 2022, we’ve been so happy to see how popular it is. Our team is passionate about providing a fun and educational experience and we love having the opportunity to share that passion with the next generation.

Meeting place

Right from the beginning, your students will be able to experience the importance of places as our guides show them the ‘Homebase’ mural created by muralist Inari with help from Worimi community member Luke Russel. Students will be able to hear the stories of Newcastle’s history and get their first taste of the evolution of Newcastle through time.

They’ll be able to explore this memorial to understand the major events in Newcastle’s history including those of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, first contact with colonial British, Newcastle as a Penal colony, and the modern revitalisation of the city.

See the past and the present first-hand

As we explore Newcastle, your students will be able to see how the past and present differ and stay the same. With historical art, photography, stories and memorials to illustrate these differences in community and landscape, your students will be able to see real-world examples of how cities and people change over time.

Interactive character studies will help the students to understand some of the most interesting local people that have shaped Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.

Convict lumber yard

Our school excursions take advantage of the history still present in Newcastle and you’ll be able to watch as your students walk through time at the Convict Lumber Yard. They’ll get to explore a piece of Australian history and play detectives through time as they collect facts from the site and enjoy the outdoors.

Let their minds wander through time

Taking the opportunity to experience the landscape and unique landscape of Newcastle, our tour guides will lead your students through a sensory meditation to let their minds wander through Muloonbinba’s past. Using each of their senses, they’ll explore what the past would have felt like and get in touch with the sights, smells and sounds of the past.

If there’s time, they’ll be able to engage further with nature by creating their own remembrance of the day. Using their artistic skills, they can make their own memorials of experience to deepen their understanding of why and how we choose to commemorate things.

Curriculum linked excursions

We’ve worked closely with academic educators and practising classroom teachers to ensure that all of our educational walking tours cover student learning outcomes in an engaging and meaningful way.

Muloobinba Wander is a great Stage 2 excursion for both history and geography learning outcomes, letting your students apply and add to their classes in a unique outdoor classroom. It covers key outcomes and inquiries from the syllabus, focusing on ‘First Contacts’, ‘Community and Remembrance’, and ‘Places are Similar and Different’.
